Dental Fillings On Obolon
What it is
A dental filling restores a tooth with a filling material after part of it has been lost to decay, a chip or an old filling that has failed. The filling seals the cavity, gives the tooth back its shape and keeps bacteria out.
At VILIDA in Obolon, we fill teeth with light-cured composite in the shade of your enamel: on back teeth the filling copies the natural cusps and fissures, on front teeth the translucent edge. Most fillings take a single visit under local anaesthesia, and the cost is set by the depth of the cavity. How decay itself is treated at each stage is explained on the Tooth Decay (Caries) Treatment page.

When you need a filling
A filling is placed when a tooth has lost some of its tissue but can still be restored without a crown.
You need a filling if
- There is a cavity left by decay
- A small chip of enamel or of the tooth’s edge has broken off
- An old filling has a dark line along its edge, has come away from the tooth or is chipping
- A filling has fallen out or the tooth under it has become sensitive
- A temporary filling placed after root canal treatment now needs replacing with a permanent one
Another treatment is needed if
- Much of a back tooth is broken down: an inlay or onlay or a crown will last longer
- You want to change the shape or colour of several front teeth: that is what aesthetic composite restoration is for
- The tooth hurts by itself or wakes you at night: pulpitis comes first
- A child’s baby tooth needs a filling: see our paediatric dentistry
Types of fillings
At VILIDA, permanent fillings are made of light-cured composite, while other materials help at particular stages of treatment.
| Filling | When it is used | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Composite (light-cured) | Permanent filling for back and front teeth | The shade is matched to the tooth; it sets under a blue curing light |
| Temporary | Between visits, for example during root canal treatment | Lasts days or weeks, so avoid chewing on that side |
| Protective liner | Under a permanent filling when the cavity is close to the pulp | Made of glass ionomer or a flowable composite and hidden under the filling |
| Inlay instead of a filling | When the walls of a back tooth are broken down | A ceramic piece made in a laboratory: from 12 600 UAH |
Fillings for front teeth
A filling on a front tooth should be invisible, so the dentist combines several shades of composite: a denser one inside, like dentine, and a more translucent one along the edge, like enamel. This is how decay between front teeth or a small chip on the edge is filled.
If the shape or colour of the tooth needs to change, or a large part of it has to be rebuilt, that is aesthetic composite restoration, which costs from 2 600 UAH. According to a review of 17 studies, composite fillings in front teeth fail at a rate of 0 to 4.1% a year, most often because of a chip, so it is best not to bite thread or open packaging with your teeth.
How a filling is placed
Each step affects how many years the filling will serve.

-
Diagnosis
The X-ray shows how deep the cavity is and whether decay is hiding under an old filling.
-
Anaesthesia
The tooth is numbed before work starts, so getting the filling does not hurt.
-
Dry field
Composite will not bond to a wet tooth, so saliva is kept away with a rubber dam or an OptraGate retractor.
-
Preparing the cavity
The dentist removes softened dentine or the old filling and gives the cavity a shape that will hold the filling.
-
Etching and adhesive
The enamel and dentine are treated with a gel, which is then rinsed off, and an adhesive is applied: a bonding agent that joins the composite to the tooth.
-
Matrix
If the cavity reaches the side of the tooth, a thin metal matrix band and a wedge are placed to rebuild the wall and a tight contact with the adjacent tooth.
-
Layers of composite
Composite goes in as thin portions, each cured with the light, so the material shrinks less.
-
Shaping and polishing
The dentist sculpts the cusps and fissures, checks the bite and polishes the filling so that plaque does not stick to it.
How long a filling lasts and when to replace it
A filling in a back tooth can last for decades. In a randomised trial that followed 99 composite fillings for 30 years, 63% were still working at the end, so about 1% were lost per year. Fillings most often failed because of new decay at the margin (39% of failures) and fracture of the material (36%). Most of this decay occurred in people at high risk of caries, and 70% of the fractures in people who grind or clench their teeth.
That is why an old filling that holds and does not leak is not replaced just because of its age. Reasons to see the dentist are a dark line or gap along the edge, a chip, food getting stuck, a sensitive tooth under the filling or decay under it on an X-ray. If the defect is small, the filling can be repaired rather than replaced completely.

How much a filling costs
The price of a composite filling depends on the depth of the cavity: superficial caries 2 250 UAH, moderate 2 650 UAH, deep 3 250 UAH. A temporary filling and a protective liner are charged separately (see the Dental treatment part of our price list), and so is anaesthesia. You will know the exact cost once the dentist has looked at the tooth.

Questions and answers
How long does it take to fill a tooth?
Usually one filling is placed in one visit; it takes longer when the cavity is large or a side wall needs rebuilding. Several fillings may be spread over several visits.
How much does a filling cost?
A composite filling at VILIDA costs from 2 250 UAH to 3 250 UAH, depending on the depth of the cavity. Anaesthesia, a liner or a temporary filling, if needed, are charged separately.
Does getting a filling hurt?
No: local anaesthetic numbs the tooth, so you feel little more than the injection. Your lip or cheek may stay numb for a few hours after the visit.
What should I avoid after a filling?
While the anaesthetic is still working, it is better not to eat so that you do not bite your cheek. A composite filling is hard straight away, so there are no other restrictions; if the filling feels high when you bite together, come back and the dentist will adjust it in a few minutes.
Why does my tooth hurt under a filling?
For a few days after the filling, the tooth can react to cold; this settles by itself. If it hurts to bite, the filling is probably slightly high. Pain that comes on by itself, at night or keeps getting worse is a reason to come in as soon as possible: that is how inflammation of the nerve shows itself.
How long can I keep a temporary filling?
Until the next visit your dentist has scheduled, usually a few days or weeks. A temporary filling is softer than a permanent one and gradually wears away, so do not put it off: decay can start again under it.
What should I do if a filling falls out?
Rinse your mouth, avoid chewing on that side and book a visit within the next few days. Do not try to put the filling back or glue it in yourself.
Filling or inlay: which should I choose?
A filling is enough for a small or medium cavity. If the walls of a back tooth are broken down, a ceramic inlay made in a laboratory will be stronger; after an examination you will hear which option suits your tooth.
