Baby Teeth Treatment On Obolon
What it is
Baby teeth treatment means treating tooth decay and its complications in a child’s primary teeth so that they stay healthy until they are naturally replaced by permanent ones. There are 20 baby teeth; the first ones come through at about 6 months, and they fall out gradually throughout childhood.
At VILIDA in Obolon, early decay in children is treated with ICON, without a drill, and holes are filled, for example with a coloured Twinky Star filling. Before any treatment, your child can come for an adaptation visit to meet the dentist and get used to the chair.

Do baby teeth need treatment?
Yes. The WHO estimates that around 510 million children worldwide have decay in their baby teeth, and it does not go away without treatment. A baby tooth keeps the space for the permanent one: if it is lost early, the neighbouring teeth drift, and the permanent tooth may not have enough room, which then calls for an orthodontist. Infection from a decayed baby tooth can spread to the permanent tooth developing beneath it. A decayed tooth also hurts and makes it harder to chew and to pronounce sounds clearly.
Removing a baby tooth instead of treating it is advised when the tooth is already loose before it is due to fall out, has crumbled below the gum line, or when the infection will not clear up. The dentist decides this after looking at the tooth and its X-ray; the procedure itself is described on the Baby Tooth Extraction page.

When a baby tooth needs treatment
Decay in baby teeth often does not hurt, so parents and a check-up every six months are what help catch it in time.
We treat the tooth if
- A white chalky spot or a dark dot has appeared on the enamel
- You can see a hole in the tooth, or food keeps catching between the teeth
- Your child complains about a tooth when eating something sweet or cold
- A piece of the tooth has chipped off or an old filling has darkened
- The dentist spotted decay during a routine visit, although your child has no complaints
Something else comes first if
- The tooth hurts at night, the gum is puffy or your child runs a temperature: this is already pulpitis in a baby tooth, so come in as soon as possible
- Your child is very afraid: start with an adaptation visit and, if needed, treatment under sedation
- The tooth is loose because the permanent one is coming through, and it does not hurt: often it is enough to watch it
- The teeth are healthy: fissure sealants and fluoride varnish will protect them
How we treat baby teeth at each stage
Treatment becomes more involved as decay goes deeper. A spot without a hole can still be stopped without a drill, but once decay reaches the nerve, the root canals have to be treated.
| Stage | Price | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| A white spot on the enamel | 1 950 UAH | We stop the decay with ICON, without a drill: the spot is infiltrated with resin and becomes almost invisible |
| Superficial decay | 1 300 UAH | We remove the affected enamel and place a Vitremer or coloured Twinky Star filling |
| Moderate decay | 1 600 UAH | We clean the cavity and restore the tooth with a filling |
| Deep decay | 1 900 UAH | We carefully clean the cavity close to the nerve and seal it with a filling |
| Pulpitis | 2 050 UAH | We treat the root canals of the baby tooth so that it lasts until it is replaced |
The ICON price is per tooth; if two or more teeth are treated, each one costs less. See every children’s price under Paediatric dentistry in our price list.
Coloured Twinky Star fillings
Twinky Star is a compomer for fillings in baby teeth made by the German manufacturer VOCO. It comes in 8 glitter colours: gold, silver, blue, pink, green, orange, lemon and berry. Your child picks the colour of the filling, which turns treatment into a game rather than an ordeal. Coloured fillings are used only on baby teeth and cost the same as regular Vitremer fillings.
How baby tooth treatment works
-
Getting to know us
Your child meets the dentist, sits in the chair and looks at the instruments, with no treatment. This way the next visit is not scary.
-
Check-up
The dentist examines all of your child’s teeth, may ask for an X-ray, and explains to you which teeth need work and how much it will be.
-
Numbing
A numbing gel goes on the gum before the injection, so your child hardly feels it. ICON and shallow decay are often treated without an injection.
-
Treatment
The dentist works in small steps and explains to your child what is happening. Each layer of the filling hardens under a lamp in less than a minute.
-
Advice for parents
The dentist tells you when your child can eat, how to brush at home and when to come back for the next check-up.
How to keep baby teeth healthy
- Brush your child’s teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and no eating after the evening brush.
- Give sweets with main meals rather than as snacks throughout the day, and no juice or sweet drinks in a bottle at night.
- Bring your child in every six months, so decay is noticed while it is still a spot and can be treated without drilling.
- Protect the back teeth with fissure sealants and fluoride varnish.

Who treats children
Questions and answers
Why treat baby teeth if they will be replaced anyway?
Because baby teeth keep the space for the permanent teeth and help a child chew and speak, while infection under them can damage the permanent tooth developing below. Besides, the back baby teeth are only replaced around the middle school years, so they serve your child for many years.
How much does baby tooth treatment cost?
A filling for a baby tooth costs from 1 300 UAH to 1 900 UAH depending on the depth of the cavity, ICON is 1 950 UAH per tooth, and root canal treatment is 2 050 UAH. You will hear the exact price once the dentist has examined your child.
Does it hurt to treat a child’s teeth?
No. A numbing gel is applied first, so the injection itself is hardly noticeable, and after it the tooth feels nothing. A spot on the enamel treated with ICON and shallow decay are often treated with no injection at all.
From what age are children’s teeth treated?
From the very first tooth: a spot on the enamel can be treated as soon as it is noticed. A filling is placed when the child can sit calmly in the chair for a few minutes. If your child is still very young or very anxious, start with an adaptation visit.
What are coloured fillings?
They are Twinky Star fillings for baby teeth: eight glitter colours, and the child chooses the colour. They cost the same as regular fillings and are used only on baby teeth.
My child has a toothache: what now?
Phone us on +38 (067) 465 06 00, and we will fit your child in as early as we can. While you wait, give a painkiller suitable for your child’s age and do not put anything warm on the cheek. Night-time pain, swelling or a temperature are signs of pulpitis, so do not wait.
Can baby teeth be treated under sedation?
Sometimes, yes: when the fear is very strong or many teeth need treatment. Whether sedation suits your child is decided by the anaesthetist after an assessment; read more on the Dental Treatment Under Sedation page.
Does a tooth that will soon fall out need treatment?
If the tooth is already loose because the permanent one is coming through, and it does not hurt, it is often enough to watch it. If it hurts or the gum next to it is inflamed, the tooth is treated or removed; the dentist will tell you which is better after the check-up.
