What it is
Dental treatment, called therapeutic dentistry in Ukraine, means treating your own teeth so that you can keep them: tooth decay, pulpitis and apical periodontitis, fillings and root canal treatment. This is what a general dentist does; teeth are extracted by an oral surgeon, and gums are treated by a periodontist.

When to see a general dentist and when another specialist
A general dentist treats the tooth itself. When the problem lies in the gums, the bone or the position of the teeth, other specialists at the clinic take over.

Anaesthesia
An injection numbs the tooth, and a numbing gel can be applied to the injection site first. If you are very anxious, the treatment can be done while you sleep.

Treatment
The tooth is isolated from saliva with a rubber dam or OptraGate. The affected tissue is removed and a filling is placed, and root canals are treated under a microscope.

Follow-up
At the end, the bite is checked and, if needed, a follow-up X-ray is taken. So that you do not have to treat the same teeth again, come for a check-up and professional hygiene every six months.
Why it pays to treat a tooth early
The WHO estimates that oral diseases affect close to 3.7 billion people, and the most common of them is untreated decay in permanent teeth. At first it does not hurt, so it is easy to miss. Left untreated, decay works its way down to the nerve and turns into pulpitis, and later into apical periodontitis, and then instead of a filling (from 2 250 UAH) the tooth needs root canal treatment (from 7 100 UAH per tooth).
That is why it is worth having your teeth checked every six months even when nothing hurts: decay at the white-spot stage can often be treated without a drill.

What does dental treatment include, and what does a general dentist do?
This area of dentistry deals with treating and restoring your own teeth; in Ukraine it is called therapeutic dentistry. A general dentist treats caries, pulpitis and apical periodontitis, places fillings and treats root canals. Teeth are extracted by an oral surgeon, gums are treated by a periodontist, and missing teeth are replaced by a prosthodontist and an implant surgeon.
How much does it cost to treat a tooth?
From 1 950 UAH for early caries to 12 600 UAH for root canal treatment of a tooth with three or more roots. You will get the exact price for your tooth after an examination and an X-ray, before anything is done.
Does dental treatment hurt?
No. Local anaesthesia numbs the tooth completely, and you only feel the injection itself. If you are very anxious, the treatment can be done while you sleep, under sedation.
Can a tooth be treated in one visit?
Caries and replacing a filling usually take one visit. Root canal treatment takes one or several visits, depending on how severe the inflammation is.
What should I do if I have a bad toothache?

Does a tooth need treatment if it does not hurt?
Yes. Caries does not go away on its own, and it usually starts to hurt only once it has reached the nerve. The earlier treatment starts, the simpler and cheaper it is: an enamel spot can be treated without drilling, while an inflamed nerve already means treating the root canals.
When can a tooth no longer be saved?
When a crack runs through the root, the tooth is broken down below the gum line, or it is very loose because of bone loss. Then an oral surgeon removes it, and an implant or a prosthesis takes its place. Before suggesting an extraction, the dentist looks for a way to keep the tooth, for example with root canal treatment under a microscope.
What should I do if a piece of my tooth has chipped off?
Rinse your mouth and see a dentist within a few days, even if it does not hurt: the sharp edge can cut your tongue, and bacteria get into the tooth more easily through the chip. A small chip is repaired with a filling or an aesthetic restoration, a large one with an inlay or a crown.
