Microscope-Assisted Dental Treatment On Obolon
What it is
Microscope-assisted dental treatment means root canal treatment and other precise procedures in which the dentist sees the inside of the tooth magnified and brightly lit through a dental operating microscope. Most often, endodontics — root canal treatment — is done under the microscope.
At VILIDA in Obolon, root canal treatment in the price list is done under a microscope: our dentists work with a Scaner MD-500 dental microscope. With magnification it is easier to find every canal, including thin and hidden ones, to remove a fragment of a broken instrument from a canal, or to notice a crack that cannot be seen with the naked eye. When and why root canals are treated, how the treatment goes and how long the tooth lasts afterwards is explained on the Root Canal Treatment page.

What the dentist sees under a microscope
A dental microscope magnifies the tooth and lights it from inside: the dentist sees the floor of the pulp chamber, the canal openings and small details that without magnification merge into one dark spot.

- Hidden and thin canals. The cheek-side root of upper molars often has a second canal. In a study of 312 root canal treatments of upper molars, it was found in 55–57% of cases with magnification (a microscope or loupes) and in 18% without magnification, that is, about three times less often.
- A broken instrument in a canal. Under a microscope it can be seen, so the dentist can try to remove it or bypass it.
- Cracks. A thin crack is easier to see with magnification, and it determines whether the tooth can be saved.
- Old fillings in the canals and perforations. During retreatment the dentist sees what is left in the canal and seals an opening in the root wall more precisely.
Who needs treatment under a microscope
A microscope is needed wherever precision decides whether the tooth can be saved, above all in the root canals.
Treatment under a microscope is used if
- Canals need treatment because of pulpitis or apical periodontitis
- The tooth has been treated before but still hurts, or an X-ray shows inflammation at the root: the canals need retreatment
- A fragment of an instrument is left in a canal
- The canals are narrow, curved or there are more of them than usual
- A crack in the tooth is suspected
A microscope will not help if
- The root has split lengthwise: such a tooth cannot be saved, so it is extracted and a replacement is planned
- The tooth is loose because of diseased gums: gum treatment comes first
- So little of the tooth is left that even a crown cannot restore it: the dentist will suggest another plan
Whether the tooth can be saved, the dentist will tell you after an examination and an X-ray.
How root canal treatment under a microscope is done
-
Examination and X-ray
The dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray and, if needed, a CT scan: they show the roots, the canals and any inflammation at the root tip.
-
Anaesthesia
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so the treatment does not hurt.
-
Rubber dam isolation
A thin rubber sheet, a rubber dam, is placed over the tooth: saliva and bacteria do not get into the canals, and solutions and small instruments do not get into the mouth.
-
Finding the canals
The dentist opens the pulp chamber and, under the microscope, looks for the openings of all canals, including thin and hidden ones.
-
Cleaning and filling
The canals are cleaned of inflamed tissue and bacteria, rinsed and tightly filled along their whole length. Sometimes the treatment is split into several visits; the dentist will tell you in advance.
-
Check and restoration
A control X-ray shows how the canals are filled. Then the tooth is restored with a filling, an inlay or a crown so that it does not split.

How much treatment under a microscope costs
In the VILIDA price list, root canal treatment under a microscope is priced per tooth, depending on the number of roots. How many roots your tooth has, the dentist will see on the X-ray.
| Tooth | Price | Which teeth, usually |
|---|---|---|
| Single-rooted | 7 100 UAH | Front teeth and most premolars |
| Two-rooted | 8 700 UAH | Often upper first premolars and lower molars |
| Three or more roots | 12 600 UAH | Mostly upper molars |

Questions and answers
How much does dental treatment under a microscope cost?
Root canal treatment under a microscope at VILIDA costs 7 100 UAH for a single-rooted tooth, 8 700 UAH for a two-rooted tooth and 12 600 UAH for a tooth with three or more roots. The dentist will give you the exact price after an examination and an X-ray.
How is treatment under a microscope different from ordinary treatment?
The dentist sees the inside of the tooth magnified and lit, so it is easier to find all canals, including hidden ones, to spot cracks and instrument fragments and to work precisely. Without magnification some canals can be missed, and a canal that has not been cleaned may become inflamed again.
What is endodontics under a microscope?
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that treats the pulp and the root canals of a tooth. Endodontics under a microscope means root canal treatment in which every step is done under the magnification of a dental microscope.
What is a dentist who treats teeth under a microscope called?
Root canal treatment is the work of an endodontist, that is, a general dentist who specialises in endodontics. The VILIDA dentists who work under a microscope are shown in the block above.
How long does treatment under a microscope take?
It depends on the number and shape of the canals: a single-rooted tooth is treated faster, a molar with curved or hidden canals takes longer. Sometimes the treatment is split into several visits; the dentist will tell you how many you need after the X-ray.
Does treatment under a microscope hurt?
No, the tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia. After treatment the tooth may feel a little sore for a few days when you bite on it; the dentist will explain what to do during this time after the visit.
Can a tooth that has already been treated be treated again?
Often yes: under a microscope the dentist removes the old fillings from the canals, looks for missed canals, cleans and fills them again. Whether the tooth can be saved depends on the condition of the root and the bone around it, which can be seen on an X-ray or CT scan.
