Removable Orthodontic Appliances On Obolon
What it is
Orthodontic appliances are devices that guide the growth of the jaws while children are growing and make room for the permanent teeth. For children these are mainly removable plates, fixed palatal expanders for the upper jaw and a face mask.
At VILIDA in Obolon, Kyiv, the orthodontist chooses the appliance after diagnostics, and it is custom-made for the child. Treatment with appliances is part of orthodontics: the earlier a bite problem is noticed, the more can be corrected while the jaws are still growing. Our other children’s services are on the Pediatric Dentistry page.

How much plates and palatal expanders cost
The price depends on the appliance: a removable plate, a fixed palatal expander and a face mask cost different amounts. During treatment the child comes in for regular check-ups, which are paid separately.
Orthodontic appliance prices
The doctor confirms the final cost after the examination.
Orthodontist consultation and comprehensive diagnostics are in the orthodontics price list. Which appliance your child needs, the doctor will tell you after the examination and X-rays.
Types of orthodontic appliances

| Appliance | What it does | Removable | How it is worn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plate | Straightens individual teeth and gradually widens the dental arch | Yes | Most of the day, taken out for meals and brushing |
| Rapid palatal expander | Widens a narrow upper jaw | No, it is attached to the molars | All the time: a few weeks of turning the screw, then holding the result |
| Face mask | Helps the upper jaw grow forward when the lower jaw is ahead of it | Yes | At home and at night, as the doctor prescribes |
Appliances work while the jaws are growing, which is why they are used for children. Once the permanent teeth are in, straightening usually continues with braces.
Palatal expander for the upper jaw
If the upper jaw is narrow, the permanent teeth lack room and the upper teeth may close inside the lower ones. A palatal expander is attached with bands to the molars, with a screw in the middle under the palate. Parents turn it with a special key following the doctor’s schedule, and the two halves of the appliance move apart step by step. While the suture in the middle of a child’s palate has not yet fused, the jaw widens with them.

Once the jaw is wide enough, the turning stops, and the appliance stays in for a few more months so that the result settles.
How to wear and care for a plate
- wearing: as many hours a day as the orthodontist prescribes; the plate comes out only for meals and brushing — if it is worn irregularly, treatment takes longer;
- getting used to it: for the first days there is more saliva, some pressure and certain sounds come out differently — this usually passes within a week or two;
- adjusting: the plate’s screw is turned only on the doctor’s schedule, and at check-ups every 3–4 weeks the orthodontist reviews how treatment is going;
- care: brush the plate twice a day, keep it in a case, do not wrap it in a napkin and do not put it in hot water — the acrylic can warp.
Who needs an orthodontic appliance
A first orthodontic check-up is worth having before the age of 7, even if there are no complaints: appliances work while the jaws are growing, and this window should not be missed.
Bring your child to an orthodontist if
- Permanent teeth are coming in crooked or crowded
- The front teeth do not meet, or the lower teeth sit in front of the upper ones
- The upper side teeth close inside the lower ones
- The child constantly breathes through the mouth or still sucks a thumb
An appliance will not help, or something else first, if
- The permanent teeth have already come through — alignment usually continues with braces
- Baby teeth with decay or inflamed gums are treated beforehand so that inflammation does not start under the appliance
- The child will not wear the plate for as many hours as prescribed — treatment will take longer
How treatment with an appliance goes
-
Consultation and diagnostics
The orthodontist examines the child’s bite, orders a cephalometric X-ray and a CT scan and decides which appliance is needed.
-
Making the appliance
The appliance is custom-made for the child’s teeth and jaw.
-
Fitting
A fixed appliance is attached to the teeth and a plate is adjusted; the doctor shows how to turn the screw and care for the appliance.
-
Check-ups
The orthodontist reviews how treatment is going and adjusts the appliance if needed.
-
Holding and the next stage
The appliance stays in while the result settles; if needed, the teeth are then straightened with braces.

Questions and answers
How much does a dental plate cost?
Orthodontic appliances at the clinic start from 6 000 UAH; the exact prices of a plate, a palatal expander and a face mask are in the table at the top of the page. Check-ups during treatment are paid separately.
Which is better: a plate or braces?
They are for different stages. Plates and appliances work while the jaws are growing and guide that growth; braces are fitted once the permanent teeth are in, to straighten them precisely.
How long does a child wear a plate?
Usually from a few months to a year or more, depending on what needs correcting. The orthodontist gives the exact timeline after diagnostics.
How do you turn a plate or a palatal expander?
With a special key, exactly as the doctor prescribes — how many turns and how often. At the first visit the orthodontist shows how to do it, and the schedule must not be changed on your own.
Does wearing an orthodontic appliance hurt?
There should be no pain. After a turn the teeth may feel some pressure — a sign the appliance is working — and it passes within a day or two.
At what age are plates and appliances used?
Most often at 6–12, while baby teeth are being replaced by permanent ones and the jaws are growing actively.
Why widen the jaw?
So that the permanent teeth have enough room and do not grow crowded, and the upper teeth meet the lower ones properly. Widening the jaw is easier in a child than in an adult.
What happens if the plate is not worn?
A plate only works while it is in the mouth. If it is worn irregularly, the result will be minimal and treatment will take longer.
