Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns On Obolon
What it is
A porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown is a crown made of a thin metal framework onto which tooth-coloured dental porcelain is layered and fired. The metal makes the crown strong, and the porcelain makes it look like a natural tooth.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal is a time-tested option that costs less than metal-free crowns. At VILIDA in Obolon, Kyiv, these crowns are placed by our prosthodontist, who first checks the tooth and the X-ray and then advises whether a PFM crown is the right choice here, or whether zirconia or ceramic would be better. You can see what a crown costs in the price table at the bottom of the page.

How a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is built
Under the crown is your own tooth, shaped so that all the layers fit on it. A metal framework made of a dental alloy sits on the tooth: a thin cap that follows the shape of the prepared tooth. To stop the grey metal from showing through, it is covered with a white opaque layer, and tooth-coloured porcelain is then built up on top and shaped into chewing cusps.

The crown is cemented in place and covers the tooth on all sides. It is the metal inside that makes it possible to use porcelain-fused-to-metal not only for single crowns but also for bridges spanning several teeth.
Who a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is for
A PFM crown is a good choice if
- You need to restore a back tooth that does not show when you smile
- You are planning a bridge to replace a missing tooth
- After root canal treatment, a back tooth has become brittle and could split
- The tooth is so broken down that a filling or an inlay will no longer hold
- You want a reliable crown at a moderate price
Another material or treatment is better if
- The tooth is in the smile zone, especially with thin gums: zirconia or E.max ceramic crowns suit it better
- You are allergic to metals: a metal-free crown is chosen
- The tooth can still be restored with an inlay, which removes less tooth
- The tooth is already lost: then you need a crown on an implant (see Implant-Supported Prosthetics)
Pros and cons of porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The strong metal framework copes with chewing on back teeth | Porcelain over metal is less translucent than a natural tooth, so on front teeth the crown is more noticeable |
| Suitable for bridges spanning several teeth | As the gum recedes over the years, a grey line may show at the edge |
| A technique proven over decades | More of the tooth is removed for metal plus porcelain than for a thin metal-free crown |
| Costs less than zirconia or pressed ceramic | The porcelain layer sometimes chips |
In terms of reliability, porcelain-fused-to-metal is as good as the alternatives: in a large 2026 systematic review, 97.1% of PFM crowns lasted five years or more, almost the same as zirconia and ceramic crowns. So the choice between them is mainly about appearance and price.
Why the gum darkens around a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown
The most common complaint about PFM crowns is a grey line or a bluish tinge to the gum next to the crown. The cause is the metal: the edge of the framework is tucked under the gum, but with age the gum recedes and the metal becomes visible (number 6 in the diagram). Thin gums can also let the metal show through, giving them a greyish tint.
On back teeth this rarely matters, but in the smile zone it is noticeable. If an old crown on a front tooth has darkened at the gum line, it can be replaced: the prosthodontist will remove it and offer a zirconia crown or E.max ceramic, neither of which contains metal.
How a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is fitted
-
Diagnosis
The prosthodontist checks the tooth and the X-ray: whether the root is healthy, whether the canals are well filled and whether there is any infection. If needed, the tooth is treated first.
-
Preparing the tooth
The tooth is reduced on all sides to make room for both the framework and the porcelain. The edge of the preparation is placed near the gum.
-
Impression and shade
The prosthodontist takes an impression, with impression material or a scanner, and chooses the porcelain shade together with you to match the neighbouring teeth.
-
Temporary crown
The prepared tooth is not left uncovered: a temporary crown is placed, and you can eat and talk as usual with it.
-
Cementation
The prosthodontist tries the crown in, checks how it fits the tooth and that it does not interfere with your bite, and then cements it.
The prosthodontist will tell you the exact number of visits after the examination: it depends on whether the tooth needs treatment first and on how many crowns you need.
How long a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown lasts
Large reviews of clinical studies show that most PFM crowns are still working after five years, and many last much longer. What most often shortens their life:
- decay in your own tooth at the edge of the crown, when the spaces between teeth are not cleaned regularly;
- chipping of the porcelain layer, more often in people who clench or grind their teeth;
- gum inflammation around the crown;
- a split root under the crown, if the tooth walls were very thin.
So look after the tooth under the crown as carefully as the others: brush twice a day, use floss or interdental brushes, and have check-ups and professional cleaning as your dentist advises. If you grind your teeth at night, the prosthodontist may suggest a protective night guard.

Questions and answers
How long does a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown last?
According to a large 2026 review, 97.1% of PFM crowns pass the five-year mark, and many of them last longer. How long yours lasts depends on the tooth under the crown, your oral care and the load on it.
Can porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns be used on front teeth?
They can, but in the smile zone they are more noticeable: porcelain over metal is less translucent, and a dark edge may appear at the gum over the years. For front teeth, the prosthodontist more often recommends zirconia or E.max ceramic.
Why has the gum next to my crown turned dark?
Most likely the edge of the metal framework is showing through or has become exposed as the gum receded with age. If it bothers you, the crown can be replaced with a metal-free one. If the gum around the crown hurts or bleeds, see a dentist, as that is a sign of inflammation.
Should I choose porcelain-fused-to-metal or zirconia?
For back teeth and bridges, PFM is a reliable and more affordable option. If the crown will show when you smile, or you are allergic to metals, zirconia is better. A comparison is on the Zirconia Crowns page.
What if I am allergic to metals?
Tell the prosthodontist at your consultation. With a metal allergy, metal-free crowns made of zirconia or pressed ceramic are suitable.
Can an old porcelain-fused-to-metal crown be replaced?
Yes. The prosthodontist removes the old crown, checks the tooth underneath, treats it if needed and fits a new crown, either porcelain-fused-to-metal or metal-free.
Can porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns go on implants?
Yes, the clinic’s price list includes PFM crowns on implants, both cemented and screw-retained. Details are on the Implant-Supported Prosthetics page.
How much does a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown cost?
According to the clinic’s price list, one PFM crown with cementation costs from 8 400 UAH. The prosthodontist will work out the total, including any preparation the tooth needs, at the consultation.
