Professional Teeth Cleaning On Obolon
What it is
Professional teeth cleaning means removing tartar, plaque and stains at the dentist with ultrasound, an Air Flow device and polishing; it is the main procedure of professional dental hygiene. A toothbrush and floss at home remove fresh plaque, but tartar that has already hardened can only be removed with dental instruments.
At VILIDA in Obolon, professional cleaning follows the clinic’s six-step protocol, from ultrasonic scaling to a fluoride varnish and advice on home care. The procedure takes 40–60 minutes; if there is a lot of tartar or the gums are inflamed, it takes longer and is sometimes split into two visits.

Where tartar comes from
Soft plaque is bacteria and food debris. If it is not removed in time with a toothbrush and floss, it absorbs minerals from saliva and hardens into tartar. Above the gum it is yellowish or brown, below the gum it is dark and hard to see. New plaque quickly settles on the rough surface of tartar, and the bacteria under it irritate the gums: they turn red, bleed, and a pocket forms between the gum and the root.

Tartar cannot be brushed off with a toothbrush or toothpaste, and it does not go away on its own. Without professional cleaning, gum inflammation can turn into periodontitis over time, and teeth may start to loosen.
Who needs professional cleaning
Regular professional cleaning is recommended for all adults, and more often for people who build up tartar quickly. Before the procedure the dentist checks your teeth and gums and, if needed, suggests other treatment first.
Cleaning is recommended if
- You can see tartar or dark stains from coffee, tea or smoking
- Your gums bleed when you brush, or you have bad breath
- You wear braces or have implants, crowns or bridges, where plaque builds up faster
- You are about to have treatment, prosthetics or whitening, which start with clean teeth
- It has been as long since your last cleaning as your dentist advised
Other treatment first, or tell your dentist, if
- A tooth hurts or your gums are swollen: first an exam and treatment of the acute inflammation
- Your gums have receded or your teeth are loose: you need gum treatment
- You are pregnant: the dentist will advise on the right time and method
- You have a pacemaker, asthma or allergies: say so in advance and the dentist will choose the cleaning method
- The cleaning is for a child: children have a separate, gentler cleaning
What professional cleaning includes
-
Ultrasound
An ultrasonic scaler breaks tartar off the tooth with vibration, while water cools the tip and rinses away the deposits.
-
Air Flow
A jet of water, air and fine powder removes plaque and stains from coffee, tea or smoking, even between teeth and around braces. In the price list this step is named after the device, PROPHYflex.
-
Polishing
The teeth are polished with a special paste: new plaque sticks less to a smooth surface.
-
Flossing
Dental floss cleans the spaces between the teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach.
-
Fluoride varnish
The teeth are coated with a fluoride varnish that strengthens the enamel and reduces sensitivity after cleaning.
-
Advice for home
The dentist picks a toothbrush, toothpaste, interdental brushes or a water flosser for you and shows how to use them so your teeth stay clean longer.
Ultrasound, Air Flow and polishing: what each removes
No method replaces the others, so a full cleaning combines them.
| Method | What it removes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ultrasound | Hard tartar above and below the gum | Otherwise tartar stays |
| Air Flow | Soft plaque and stains, including between teeth and around braces | Teeth regain their natural colour |
| Polishing | Small rough spots left after cleaning | Smooth enamel stays clean longer |
| Fluoride varnish | — | Strengthens enamel and reduces sensitivity |

How often to have professional cleaning
There is no single schedule: your dentist decides how often you should come for a check-up and cleaning based on the condition of your teeth and gums. British guidance recommends setting the interval between check-ups individually, from three months to two years. More frequent cleaning is advised for people who build up tartar quickly, wear braces, have implants, smoke or have gum inflammation.
How much professional teeth cleaning costs
A full cleaning of both jaws, with ultrasound, Air Flow, polishing and fluoride varnish, costs 2 500 UAH. You can also have tartar or plaque removed from one area only, or just a polish; the prices are below, from the VILIDA price list.

Who does professional cleaning
Questions and answers
Does professional cleaning hurt?
Usually not: you feel vibration and cool water. If your teeth are sensitive or your gums are inflamed, it may be uncomfortable; tell the dentist and they will work more gently.
Does professional cleaning damage enamel?
No. Ultrasound and Air Flow remove deposits, not enamel, and after polishing and fluoride varnish the tooth surface is smooth and protected. Temporary sensitivity can occur when the neck of the tooth is exposed under the tartar, and it usually passes.
How long does professional teeth cleaning take?
40–60 minutes. If there is a lot of tartar or the gums are inflamed, it takes longer and is sometimes split into two visits.
What should you avoid after cleaning?
For a few hours, avoid coffee and tea, foods that stain teeth, and smoking: after cleaning, enamel picks up pigment easily. The dentist will give you the rest of the advice for the first day.
Can you have cleaning with braces or implants?
Yes, and even more often than usual: plaque builds up faster around braces and implants. Tell the dentist in advance about implants, crowns or veneers so they can choose the tips and settings.
Can you have professional cleaning during pregnancy?
Tell the dentist that you are pregnant and they will advise on the right time and method. Healthy gums matter especially during pregnancy: hormonal changes make them more prone to inflammation.
How is cleaning different from whitening?
Cleaning removes plaque and stains, so teeth regain their natural colour. Only whitening can make them lighter than their natural shade, and it is done after cleaning.
What happens if tartar is not removed?
Tartar does not go away on its own and grows over time. The bacteria under it keep the gums inflamed: they bleed and recede from the teeth, and without treatment this can turn into periodontitis.
