How metal braces are built
Each bracket has a mesh base bonded to the enamel and a slot that holds the archwire. A small elastic ligature keeps the wire in the slot. On the back teeth the wire goes into a tube, so the system works as one unit. The orthodontist gradually replaces thin wires with stiffer ones, and the teeth move step by step according to the plan.

Grey or coloured bands
Ligatures — the small elastic bands that hold the wire in the brackets — come in grey, clear and colours. Grey ones are the least noticeable on metal, coloured ones turn braces into a bright accent, and clear ones may yellow over time from coffee and tea.

One visit: bonding usually takes an hour or two, depending on whether braces are fitted on one jaw or both.
Do metal braces damage enamel?
